《小世界》的副标题“学者的罗曼史”暗示洛奇对圣杯传奇这一神话原型的应用。圣杯骑士们出于宗教动因历尽艰辛寻找圣杯,这种叙述模式恰好可以容纳一大批不同人物的漫长旅程,而且从当代文坛学者们在研讨会上戏剧化地表现文化生活中野心与情欲的张力中,洛奇发现了与圣杯传奇相类似的东西。《小世界》以圣杯传奇为叙事结构影射了当代西方学术界精神上的匮乏。他们匆匆忙忙穿梭于不同大陆的猎艳、寻奇,彻底粉碎了学术界神圣化的传说,指出当代世界的精神荒原。
The subtitle of “Little World,” “The Romance of Scholars,” suggests Lodge’s use of the mythological prototype of the Holy Grail legend. The Holy Grail knights have gone through painstaking search for the holy grail because of their religious motivation. This narrative model happens to accommodate the long journey of a large number of different people. And from the tension of contemporary literary scholars at the seminar, the tension in ambition and passion in cultural life , Lodge found something similar to the legend of the Holy Grail. The “small world” uses the legend of the Holy Grail as its narrative structure to reflect the lack of spirituality in contemporary Western academic circles. They hurried through the splendid scenes of hunting in different continents and seeking odd surprises, completely shattering the academic sacred legend and pointing out the spiritual wasteland in the contemporary world.
