The advent of Coleen MeCullough’s novel The Thorn Birds, an Australian writer, has caused a sensation and is known as Australia’s Gone with the Wind. This paper attempts to use the “three levels of personality structure” in Freudian theory to interpret the inner feelings and the rational conflicts of the main characters in the novel and to argue that their tragedies are fundamentally the tragedies of their own personality imbalances ?
