日本柴油发动机载重车装置排气制动的较为普遍,且通称为第三制动。它隶属于脚制动、手制动之外的第三辅助制动系统,亦称之为“无磨损”的发动机制动。由于它适于下长坡减速,故也有下坡慢行器之称。排气制动的原理是,在排气管道中装置一能关闭的阀门,在车子需减速时,将排气通道堵死,废气排不出去且受压缩。这种泵气损失消耗车子的动能,产生制动效果。日本各类型的排气制动装置的基本原理相同,所不同的是控制方法与结构形式有所不一
