Objective: To elucidate the mechanism of tooth development, to explore the role of programmed cell death (PCD) and its related regulatory genes in tooth development. Methods: The expressions of PCD, Bcl-2 and Bax genes in SD rats during different stages of tooth development were studied by in situ end-labeling, in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry. Results: The expressions of PCD, Bcl-2, Bax mRNA and protein in the early growth phase of tooth germ were very strong. The expressions of PCD and Bcl-2 mRNA decreased gradually after tooth tissue formation, but the expression of Bax protein was still significant . Conclusion: Bcl-2, Bax gene and PCD may be important regulators in tooth development
