It is an honour to accept the privilege of once again expressing my gratitude to the eminent mycolo-gist Stanley John Hughes,by presenting here my memories of a time of training under his wing and the subsequent development of a sincere friendship. His scientific and mycological career has already been described and commented on at length(Table 1),so I will not repeat that again here. The surprises of life mean that the path ahead is never assured or predictable. In 1952 I graduated as an engineer in tropical agronomy at the University of Louvain and decided to prepare myself for Africa by studying phi-losophy,theology,ethnography,and African lan-guages.But in March 1954,this project was stopped by simultaneous meningitis and poliomyelitis.
