The effect of phosphorus on the creep property of austenitic stainless steel at high temperature is discussed. The article states that austenitic stainless steels containing trace amounts of phosphorus or phosphorus and carbon give higher solid solution strengthening, higher age hardening and higher high temperature creep strength. The strengthening mechanism of phosphorus is to increase the stability of M_ (23) C_6 fine carbides and to the pinning and bending of the grain boundaries.
