Japan Hitachi Hitachi Research Laboratory developed a new LCD, the threshold voltage, high contrast is its two characteristics. When used in batteries or calculators, the device can be effectively driven directly by complementary-MOS slices. The threshold voltage of this display is about 5V, and a peak contrast of 60: 1 is reached when the voltage is 8V that matches the complementary CMOS chip. The liquid crystal for the new device is a cholesteric liquid crystal in which about 0.6% by weight of the nematic mixed liquid crystal is added.
