中国是个爱酒的国度,胜于爱水;酒固然醇美,却可醉人;水貌似平淡,却是必须与常识。陈独秀、鲁迅是酒,胡适、蔡元培是水;“根本解决”式的革命是酒,一点一滴地改造、“从教育出发”是水;法兰西、苏俄是酒,英美是水。90年前的那些人和事已经化为符号,因为我们习惯于定义,因此对定义倒是越来越麻木。每到历史的车头追得我们气喘吁吁的时候,我们都用抒情和概念去打扮平凡与庸俗。而生活就是平凡和庸俗,它缓慢而痛苦,既不是一个概念,更不是历史课本上的一个名词,对于英雄,我是很怕、也很担心的。灵魂不仅需要崇拜和供奉,更需要一把熨斗,去褶、去抚平。对历史,我们还是应该抱着一种“理解的同情”。

It is neither a concept nor a term in historical textbooks. I am afraid and heroic about fear. The soul not only needs worship and worship, but also need an iron, to pleat, to heal. For history, we should still hold a kind of “sympathetic understanding.”
