Gold played an important role in the development of Australia’s history. The golden fever that rose in 1851 lasted nearly a century. Its gold production was once the world leader. Gold production in the 1960s accounted for 40% of the world. The highest annual output in 1903 reached 119.3 tons. After 1940 the output declines year by year, dropping to 15.4 tons in 1976. However, the output in 1980 was only 17 tons, less than 2% of the world’s gold production. Since the 1980s, due to the soaring gold prices in the international market and the encouragement policies adopted by the domestic government, the development of gold mines has been greatly promoted and the gold output has risen rapidly with an average annual increase of 30%. The world’s fastest growing gold production countries. In 1987 the output reached 108 tons (see table below), which will rise to 130 tons in 1988 and is expected to remain at this level in the 1990s.
