Chemically, Methazolamide is a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor closely related to acetazolamide and has some favorable pharmacological properties. Approximately 45% of plasma Methazolamide does not bind to plasma proteins. As a result, it is easy to diffuse into the tissue; whereas only 7% of acetazolamide is free. In addition, the plasma half-life of methazolamide is about 3 times that of acetazolamide. In normal subjects, oral doses of methazolamide are as low as 25 mg, 3 times a day, and their plasma drug concentration equals the need to lower the intraocular pressure in rabbits.
