丁野鹤是明清之际的著名诗人、戏曲家、小说家，堪称全才的文学人物。曾创作过“传奇十三种”，但存世者只有四种。以历史剧《表忠记》最精彩。塑造了杨继盛这个与权奸斗争的英雄形象，大大超过了同题材的《鸣凤记》；他的爱情剧《西湖扇》，是借宋金之战乱，写明清变革时的真人真事。“以一扇为纽带，以二诗为线索”，移花接木，构思巧妙，故事曲折，情节动人。《赤松游》剧表现了作者“功成身退”“消极避世”的思想，《化人游》是作者逃避现实之作，应该说是符合作者后期思想感情的。他不愧是一个有思想、有见解、有文才的两代文学家。
