From the 1990s to the foreseeable future, there will be no fundamental change in the status of steel as an important structural material and in some aspects of a wide range of functional materials. 1. Basic Situation From a global perspective, the demand for steel in the 1990s will be modestly increased in fluctuation (see Figure 1). The International Iron and Steel Institute estimates that in 2000 the world demand for steel will reach 790 million tons Both up 0.8%. Still others predict that world steel production will grow at an average annual rate of 1.3% per year in the 1990s. In terms of quality and variety, the general trend is that the requirements are getting higher and higher, and the cost competition will also become more and more intense. Compared with other materials, the general trend of steel prices is relatively slow. Iron and steel products will no longer be dominated by other materials (as small as they were) from 1974 to 1986. 90s infrastructure, infrastructure
