钟早在奴隶社会以前就有了,“钟最先可能是竹木制成的”(见郭沫若《彝器形象学试探》)。后来用陶器制作。陕西省长安县客省庄出土的一件陶钟和现在的铜钟相似,由此可知,钟在原始社会就有了。钟最初不是乐器,它是一种用来盛装东西的器物。由于生产力的发展,社会的分工,人们用它来换取其他物品,它又是社会最初的一种货币.人们在庆祝丰收的时节,就敲击它来伴舞歌唱,久而久之它逐渐的成为一种乐器。由于商代出现了青铜业,钟被铸造成铜的。从此它成为一件正式的乐器,出现在音乐艺术的摇篮里。经过千百年的使用,人们在制作铸造上的花样也逐渐地繁多起
