脑垂体由腺垂体和神经垂体构成。根据HE和Mallory三色法等标准方法的染色特性,传统上将腺垂体的细胞分成三类:(1)嫌色性细胞,约占细胞总数的50%,含有少量细胞浆,光镜下不显颗粒,然而电镜证明它也有少许分泌颗粒;(2)嗜伊红或嗜酸性细胞,约占细胞总数的40%,在人类聚集成簇,特别是在腺垂体的两侧;(3)嗜硷性细胞,用苏木素或苯胺蓝染色时,胞浆中有蓝染的颗粒。嗜酸性细胞又称α-细胞,嗜硷性细胞又称β-细胞,而嫌色细胞可能是它们的前身。
