The use of hollow glass core fibers improves the performance of next generation infrared sensors and fiber optic transmission systems for laser surgery. James Harrington, professor of ceramics and materials engineering at Rutgers University in New Jersey, designed this flexible fiber. It features a silver-coated inner layer that produces a mirror-like surface that transmits infrared radiation. Polymlcro Technologies of Phoenix has confirmed this technology and is expected to be used in printing, material handling, sensors and spectroscopy Harrington believes that in all possible applications, such fibers are most likely to be used in sensors to measure very high temperatures, such as measuring the temperature of the gas exiting a jet engine.
