2010年4月20日,随着墨西哥湾的Transocean公司的“Deepwater Hori-zontal(深水地平线)”深水钻井平台的一声轰响,引发了墨西哥湾长达数月的深海钻井的原油泄漏事件。这一海上泄油的恶性事故,被欧美媒体称为人类历史上最严重的海洋环境污染事件。负责这次深海石油勘探任务的英国BP石油公司,在经历了几次处理泄油事故措施失败之后,终于在7月15日,第2次更换海底防喷器(BOP)组的作业获得初步进展。而获得处理泄油事故的最后胜利,则还要等待8月中旬,BP公司完成2口救援井(relief well)的作业。
