如果把胡适和鲁迅并称为二十世纪中国的文化伟人,大约不会有多少人发出疑问。不同的是,胡适主要是一位博雅中庸的学界翘楚,鲁迅则更多的是一位文化斗士。但是,近读史学家何炳棣先生的新著《读史阅世六十年》,却多少改变了我对胡适先生的一贯看法,知道了胡先生还有不怎么高大的另一面,借用何先生的话说,就是胡是一个“目空一切,粗犷不拘,恣意戏谑,大失公允”的褊狭之人。为言之可信计,我先略述一下何炳棣先生的简历。何氏1938年毕业于清华大学,1952年获美国哥伦比亚大学英国史博士学位。1966年后分
