接舷与冲撞的时代虽说海战战术在某些时候是通过少数天才的海军指挥官创造出来的,但是不要忘了,任何海战战术的提出和使用都必须以相应的舰载武器的发展为基础,如果没有舰船和舰载武器为战术专家门提供实现其作战理念的物质平台,那么再先进的战术也没有实现的可能性。公元10～12世纪,世界造船业取得了许多成就,这时期欧洲出现了帆船,海军舰船开始从单一的桨船向桨帆船过渡,之后是完全的风帆战舰。在动力方面,中国舰船比同时期的欧洲要先进一些,至少在公元1世纪的汉代就有了使用桨帆推动
