A comprehensive program of comparative study on the sampling of coastal soft clay with the fixed piston thin wall sampler and the thick wall open drive tube sampler was executed in Lian-yungang, Jiangsu Province. It was found that, in comparison with the properties of samples obtained by the thick wall tube sampler, the unconfined compressive strength increased by 60%, the quick direct shear strength increased by 40% and the compression index by 8%, when the thin wall sampler was used. Besides, the average strain at failure in the unconfined compression test of samples obtained by the thin wall sampler was only about 3%, which indicated convincingly that high-quality samples obtained by the fixed piston thin wall sampler.
