1945年4月,中国共产党第七次全国代表大会在延安举行。会间休息,毛泽东笑盈盈地走向一位个子不高的年轻军人,老远就伸出了右手。那军人立即举起左手,端端正正敬了一个军礼——他的右臂是一条空袖管。“贺炳炎同志,你是独臂将军嘛,不用这样敬礼。从今往后免掉你这份礼吧！”毛泽东连忙用右手握住贺炳炎的左手,亲切地说。
