United States: A quiet revolution is sweeping through Oregon, U.S.A. and will cause changes in the wood industry. The stabilizing effect that the timber industry has provided to the community for more than a century has faded, and sawmills and the employment opportunities they create have also been declining. The change in forest ownership is at the core of this quiet change. At present, some large companies such as Hyeri and others have abandoned the vertically integrated model and now they are paying more attention to land sales and housing construction instead of focusing on forest cultivation and timber production. Instead, there are Timber Investment Management Companies (TIMO) that serve anonymous investors. In the past 12 months, reporters from seven Eastern Oregon publishing companies have collected information on the transfer of ownership of forest land.
