在广泛搜集和深入研究西瓜种质资源的基础上，综合采用多种先进育种方法育成两个优良自交系，进一步杂交育成西瓜杂种一代新品种“西农８号”。其经济性状全面超过“金钟冠龙”、“新红宝”等进口主栽品种，在全国各地均表现高产、稳产、座果性好、含糖量高，且梯度小、果肉质细，口感好，品质极优；高抗枯萎病，兼抗炭疽病、耐重茬，可解决连作障害的难题；果皮坚韧，耐贮运，外观及果肉美观，商品性好；露地栽培及大棚栽培效果均佳。该品种适应性极强，已在我国２０余省（市、自治区）大面积推广，经济效益、社会效益极为显著
