Small and intermediate plant trials have shown that gold and uranium have been successfully recovered from Wittgenstein Cyanide residues by wet strong magnetic separation. On this basis, an industrial-type strong magnetic separator was installed at a gold mine in South Africa. The mechanical properties and sorting indexes of the machine were satisfactory. Meanwhile, the economic effect was remarkable. In order to maximize the recovery of gold and uranium, wet intense magnetic separation (WHIMS) can be combined with other unit operations such as flotation. This concept proves to be suitable, not only for some tailings re-election, but also for coarser materials. The latter can be fine grinding ore energy, but also produce a filler for underground backfill. Also described is under development, improved, lower cost wet ferromagnetic separator situation.
