墓志铭,通常说来既是死者墓碑上所刻的文字,它是人们对死者理性描述和感性表达的结合体。英语墓志铭形式丰富,内容多样,揭示了西方人的生死观。普通的英语墓志铭形式简洁,为了便于读者直接掌握有效信息,它的用语慎重而巧妙。而特殊的英语墓志铭也有许多鲜明的特点。其中最显著的特点便是简洁明了。其次,英语墓志铭不失幽默。再次,在英语墓志铭上陈述死因并非禁忌。因为西方的历史传统是从终极(即死亡)的角度来看待生命,换言之,在西方文化中,死亡被当做一个新的开始。最后,英语墓志铭偏向于强调个人的理性存在。所有这些特点集中地反映了西方人豁达的生死观。
Epitaph, usually both the engraved text on the deceased’s tombstone, it is a combination of rational description and emotional expression of the deceased. English epitaphs are rich in form and varied in content, revealing the Westerners’ view of life and death.
