湖南宁乡人。早年肄业于长沙高等中学,1919年先后在北京、保定参加了“五四”运动,并去上海外国语学社学习。1920年在长沙加入中国社会主义青年团。1921年赴莫斯科东方劳动者共产主义大学学习,同年转入中国共产党(介绍人罗亦农)。1922年夏回国,在中国劳动组合书记部工作,曾任中共湘区委员会委员、安源工人俱乐部主任、中华全国总工会副委员长、湖北省总工会党团书记兼秘书长,参加领导了粤汉铁路工人大罢工和安源路矿工人大罢工。1925年在第二次全国劳动大会上当选为中华全国总工会副委员长,参加领导了“五卅”运动和省港大罢工。1926年在武汉任湖北省总工会组织部长、秘书长。1927年1月参加领导武汉工人和市民收回汉口英租界的斗争,同年4月
Hunan Ningxiang people. He was educated in Changsha High School in his early years, successively in Beijing in 1919, participated in the May 4th Movement in Baoding, and went to Shanghai Foreign Languages Institute to study. In 1920, he joined the Chinese Socialist Youth League in Changsha. In 1921 went to Moscow Oriental Laborer Communist University, the same year into the Communist Party of China (introducer Luo Yimin). He returned to China in the summer of 1922 and worked in the secretary of the Labor Department of China. He was a member of the Central Committee of Hunan Province, director of Anyuan Workers’ Club, vice chairman of All-China Federation of Trade Unions, secretary of the caucuses and caucus of Hubei Federation of Trade Unions. Railway workers strike and Anyuan Road miners strike. In 1925, he was elected as vice chairman of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions at the Second National Labor Conference, taking part in the “Five Mile” campaign and the general strike in the province and Hong Kong.
