According to The New England Journal of Medicl 1994, Vol. 331, No. 20, the authors divided 72 patients with acute renal failure requiring hemodialysis into two treatment arms for a prospective study to understand the biocompatibility of dialysis membranes . The first group consisted of 35 people using a cuprophane membrane that activated the complement system and leukocytes.
