The authors conducted a retrospective survey of vertical transmission of HCV in 79 pregnant women and their children with a history of intravenous drug addiction at risk of contracting hepatitis C virus (HCV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in Edinburgh, England. Serum was tested for anti-HCV by Abbott and Wellcome’s second-generation Hepatitis C EIA reagent. Positive samples were further tested by RIBA and Western blot supplementation (RIBA HCV SIA). Serum from HCV-infected mothers and their infants was detected by PCR and subjected to restriction-length polymorphism (RFLP) typing. The results showed that 56 of 79 mothers were infected with HCV, of which 33 were HCV PCR-RNA positive. None of the 25 mothers born to HCV-infected mothers did not
