Plastic products such as baby bottles often contain a common chemical called bisphenol A, which has led to birth defects in mice during experiments. U.S. researchers suspect it has equally bad consequences for humans. In a new issue of the journal The Journal of Epidemiology, they report that even people exposed to very small amounts of bisphenol A may cause abortion or mental retardation like Down’s syndrome. Bisphenol A, as a hormone disruptor, can cause embryonic defects and its use has long been criticized by environmentalists. This discovery is entirely by accident.
