19世纪初,随着西方资本主义国家的对外扩张,作为这些国家统治力量的精神支柱—教会,掀起了对外传道的热潮。办教会学校成了他们传播宗教的一个主要方式,不仅使西方宗教在中国提高了声誉,并且在实际上扩展了宗教力量。教会学校的音乐教育和音乐活动,在前期主要服从于宗教教育的需要;在后期,宗教教育削弱了,但在音乐活动中也存在这种因素。因此,教会学校的音乐教育在传播宗教意识方面起到了比较重要的作用。
In the early 19th century, with the outward expansion of western capitalist countries, the church, which was the spiritual pillar of the governing power of these countries, set off a wave of foreign preaching. The practice of church schools became one of the main ways in which they spread religion. They not only raised the reputation of Western religions in China, but actually expanded religious power. In the early days, music education and music activities in ecclesiastical schools mainly obeyed the needs of religious education. In the later period, religious education was weakened, but it was also found in music activities. As a result, music education in ecclesiastical schools plays a more important role in spreading religious awareness.
