Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism are the cornerstones of the Chinese culture. The Confucianists, including Legalists, Mohists, and other military academies, are mainly pursuing the utilitarianism of life. Zhuangzi and Zen, on the other hand, are ontological philosophers who pursue the ideal personality and realm of life. These two philosophical views constitute the two main aspects of the history of the development of Chinese thought. Although Zhuangzi and Zen both discarded, negated the real world and pursued nothingness, revealing nature and life’s affirmation and interest, the two have great differences after all. This article will compare and analyze Zhuangzi’s “Happy” and Zen’s “Free”.
