The current situation and development of chemical heat treatment for controlled atmosphere carburizing, carbonitriding and low temperature nitriding for precision parts without oxidation and micro deformation are described. Two new technologies suitable for these chemical heat treatments are introduced Carburizing atmosphere and low-vacuum pulsed nitridation. The application of rare earth elements in chemical heat treatment is also briefly described.
