在我国社会主义现代化建设的新时期，邓小平依据唯物史观的基本原理，第一次明确提出“社会主义精神文明”这一科学命题，并在改革开放和现代化建设的实践中形成了社会主义精神文明建设的理论，丰富和发展马克思主义的唯物史观和科学社会主义学说。考察这一理论的形成过程，认清思想渊源，有利于我们理解其实质，贯彻其精神，在实践中坚持和发展社会主义精神文明建设理论。
