目前,在中国纪录片的创作力量格局中,中央电视台所属的纪录频道、科教频道、中央新闻纪录电影制片厂、北京科学教育电影制片厂组成旗舰力量,引领并带动着中国纪录片的发展。中国教育电视台第三频道与上海文广纪实频道、四川广电、湖北广电等省级电视台构成中国纪录片创作的中坚力量;社会上仍在坚守的独立纪录片制作机构、独立纪录片制作人及高校中新闻传播、影视制作等相关专业的学生,则成为中国纪录片创作的边缘力量。
