2004-2005赛季有一个共同的特点,那就是英超、意甲和西甲三个联赛的三支豪门都落了个两手空空的下场。首先来看英超的曼联:利物浦捧起欧洲冠军杯,曼联则在冠军联赛16进8的比赛中败在了AC米兰脚下;足总杯决赛阿森纳击败曼联称雄,曼联只落了个亚军的下场;切尔西则连夺联赛杯和联赛冠军,联赛杯上曼联在半决赛当中止步于切尔西面前,英超联赛则排在切尔西和阿森纳之后名列第三。这样一来,英超传统强队中就只剩下曼联遭遇了一个两手空空的赛季。与曼联同病相怜的还有AC米兰,意甲联赛最后阶段失去动力,败给了竞争对手尤文图斯;意大利杯赛AC米兰负于乌迪内斯止步8强;冠军联赛上则在决赛中功亏一溃,败给了利物浦。西甲的皇马则已经是第二个赛季两手空空了,西甲联赛由于巴萨的强势和皇马自身的状态起伏,早早退出了冠军争夺;
