It is well known that smoking is harmful to health, but another hazard of smoking, known as radioactive hazards, is poorly understood. Thomas H. Winters, Head of the Occupational Health Center, North Quincy, Massachusetts, and the University of Massachusetts Dr. Joseph R. DeFranz, a medical center, measured the amount of radioactivity contained in cigarettes and smoked a pack of semi-cigarettes a day. The lungs absorbed about 300 chest radiographs a year. This is the main reason why smokers are predisposed to lung cancer. Modern scientific research shows that the radioactive material in cigarettes comes mainly from uranium-rich phosphate fertilizers used to grow tobacco. This uranium element undergoes several decay to generate radioactive material and is quickly absorbed by tobacco. Secondly, it absorbs natural radioactive substances from soil, air and water and the dangerous elements floating in the air are absorbed by the sticky cilia on the tobacco leaf . These dangerous elements are burned to none at smoking
