Objective To investigate the effect of early magnesium sulfate treatment on mitochondria after traumatic brain injury in rats. Methods Thirty SD rats were randomly divided into normal control group, traumatic brain injury group and magnesium sulfate treatment group. Rats with craniocerebral injury induced by free fall were treated with intraperitoneal injection of magnesium sulfate. The content of Ca2 +, Mg2 +, malondialdehyde (MDA) in brain mitochondria and the content of superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. Results After traumatic brain injury, mitochondrial Ca2 + and MDA content increased, Mg2 + content and SOD activity decreased (P <0.05). Compared with the trauma group, magnesium sulfate treatment group these changes were significantly inhibited. Conclusion Early magnesium sulfate treatment can reduce mitochondrial free radical damage after traumatic brain injury in rats.
