建队渊源18世纪末,瑞士企业家甘珀和另十个外国人在巴塞罗那玩起了一项当时不为当地人所知的运动——足球。1899年11月29日,甘珀创建了巴塞罗那足球俱乐部,世界足坛很快开始了一段属于巴塞罗那的传奇时代。为了对抗由外国人创办的巴塞罗那,1900年10月28日,一群大学生在加泰罗尼亚首府巴塞罗那又成立了另外一支俱乐部,他的名字叫西斑牙人。1912年,西班牙国王阿方索八世正式授予西班牙人“皇家”称号。所以,西班牙人队的全称应为皇家西班牙人队。也正是由于这个原因,历史上西班牙人从来都不是巴赛罗那的兄弟球会,激进的加泰罗尼亚人对这个俱乐部也并不认可。
