奥林匹克运动会目前所包括的项目是人类在最简单的跑、跳、投以及角力等原始竞技的基础上逐渐发展、丰富起来的.古代奥运会留给人们的是那些著名雕塑家的诸如“掷铁饼者”那样的绝无仅有的几个雕塑.现代奥运会包括了人类所创造的绝大多数项目,从球类运动一直到冰上芭蕾舞.细心的人也许会发现,除了柔道、射箭这些源于亚洲的体育项目外,其他一切,均由欧美所创造并得到确认,纳入奥林匹克运动.事情到此并没有结束,欧美人在当代所创造的一些体育项目很快就会被国际承认,最著名的例子就是帆板.
