天池构造位于鄂尔多斯盆地西部天环向斜西翼,为一短轴穹窿构造。该构造于1954年发现,1985年经地震复测证实。二叠系下统山西组低界T_9反射层的构造轴向为北北东,长轴9.4km,短轴7.5km,闭合度200m,圈闭面积53.5km~2,高点埋深3846m,南翼被一条北东东向逆断层切割,断距90m。无断层影响的构造圈闭面积为26km~2,闭合度150m。 1981年钻天深1井过程中,曾往奥陶系风化壳石灰岩中放空、漏失,气测甲烷为0.024~0.1%,岩心裂缝发育。下古生界碳酸盐岩地层中共有17个缝、洞发育段,累厚183.4m。该井未进行中途测试。 1986年1月5日以奥陶系为目的层钻天1井,
