《遐迩贯珍》是第一次鸦片战争后英国传教士在香港创办的第一份中文月刊,其刊行年代(1853~1856年)正值近代华工出国高峰时期。刊物中出现大量关于华工出国与海外华人的报道,其内容丰富、类型多元,通过消息、通讯、评论、公告、条规以及轮船广告等多种形式,记录了19世纪中期华南沿海地区民众经由香港赴海外务工谋生的历史情形。报道内容不仅涉及华工出国的规模、流向、海上交通与生活、域外华人劳作生活、西方视野下的华人形象等,同时作为一份英国传教士主办的刊物,相关文章的评论视角也折射出英国政府在移民政策、航运利益及对华治港等问题上的态度与立场。这些内容对于研究19世纪中期华人移民具有重要的史料价值,对于华工华人研究的思路与方法具有启发性意义。
“Nearly Zhen Jane” was the first Chinese monthly magazine founded by a British missionary in Hong Kong after the First Opium War. Its publication period (1853 ~ 1856) coincided with the peak of overseas Chinese laborers going abroad.
