目前市售或学校自制的旋轉休模型,多用木貭或鉄絲,薄鉄制成。这一类的模型有它的优点,但也有它的缺点。优点为用薄鉄制的模型可作充水实驗。譬如等底等高的圓柱的容水量是圓錐的三倍。用木制解剖的圓錐可以看出各种位置不同之截面的实际形状。其缺点为:此类模型形状是固定的,因此它不能說明旋轉体产生的过程。此外在制作上有困难,譬如我們很难用木料或鉄貭材料制成各种奇特形状的球扇形。为了消除上述的缺点,我們仿照,每逢端午节前市售翻花葫芦的作法,創造了一种展开式旋轉体模型,茲将其制作方法介紹如下:
