任伯年是晚清著名的绘画大师,其人物画、花鸟画在中国绘画史上开创了新的局面。他所作的人物画,有肖像画也有历史故事和民间传说,题材丰富,内容通俗易懂。他的肖像画,《三友图》源于其父的民间写真术,又继承了曾波臣一派先画墨骨然后敷彩的画法,造型简练、准确,表情传神,手法多变,在人物画的艺术成就直接影响了日后中国现当代的人物画发展趋势。任伯年的人物绘画风格,反映出清末中国社会发生变动后,市民阶级对绘画艺术的审美要求。
