In recent years, the tidal wave of commodity economy has not only violently hit every corner of the social economy, but also jolted the library cause as a part of education, science and culture. The rising price of books and periodicals is a common problem among museums. Taking People’s Daily as an example, the price was 36 yuan in 1988 and 72 yuan in 1990, an increase of 100%. This is still the lowest rate newspaper. Taking books again as an example, according to a survey conducted by the Ministry of Culture Library in 1988, the average purchase price of the national public libraries in 1983 was 1.93 yuan, rising to 3.10 yuan in 1985 and 7.90 yuan in 1989, a four-fold increase in six years. The price increase of books and periodicals is much higher than the increase of books and funds, resulting in a substantial reduction in the varieties and quantities of books purchased by the museums year after year.
