Zhang Hongyuan was born in 1902, Huayang County, Sichuan. He was admitted to Tsinghua University in Beijing in 1916 and studied in the United States after graduating in 1924. He studied chemistry at California Institute of Technology and Massachusetts Institute of Technology and received a doctorate in 1930. Zhang Hongyuan is an avid Chinese Chemical Society. As early as 1930, when the Chinese Chemical Engineering Society was founded at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States, he was one of the founding fathers and served as chairman of the council three times.
