小剧场戏剧运动产生于上个世纪末至本世纪初的欧洲戏剧舞台,是戏剧积极实验、探索出路的结果。中国小剧场戏剧自1982年林兆华第一次将话剧《绝对信号》搬上舞台始,至今已有近三十年的历史,且越来越兴盛。受之影响,昆曲舞台上除了较多演出折子戏和大型本戏、连台本戏外,也出现了具有小剧场戏剧意义的演出形式:昆曲小剧场戏。2008年江苏省昆剧院演出的《临川四梦·汤显祖》已肇其端倪,而2010年国庆期间该院创作演出的《我的浣纱记——伯龙夜品》,又为昆曲小剧场的发展向前推进了一步。
