Joseph Heller (1923-1999) is a famous American contemporary novelist, but also an outstanding representative of black humor. His “Twenty-second Army Regulation” is hailed as the classic of black humor. The publication of the second novel “An Accident” in 1974 further established Heller’s important position in contemporary American novelists. “An accident” further analyzes American society, through the lengthy confession of the protagonist Bob Slokom, the emptiness of people’s spiritual life in peacetime and the unpredictable panic over the future. This thesis analyzes the disorderly narrative time of “accident” by using the theory of postmodern narratology, and reveals the instability of the novel while deepening the theme of the novel.
