一部西方音乐史书应以什么内容为主?这是西方音乐史研究范围内无法回避的重要课题。但长期以来,对这个问题只是偶尔提及。杨燕迪同志认为:“外国音乐”一般特指西方音乐——欧美的专业艺术音乐”。魏廷格同志提出:“一部音乐史实质上是一部音乐创作发展史”。钱仁康、蔡良玉、仲仁提到:“革命历史歌曲(或称群众歌曲)是外国音乐史中的重要课题”。外国学者阿·伊·康津斯基的《西洋音乐通史》第一册“绪论”中提出:“音乐史课的内容是研究民间音乐、专业音乐、世俗音乐和宗教音乐(早期的)、乐器的发展、演奏演唱艺术的发展、各时代的音乐生活、音响学、音乐理论、音乐批评、音乐美学以及音乐教育诸问题”(笔者归纳)这些提法各有侧重,也蕴含了各人对音乐史内容、结构等的不同看
