Cabletron, meanwhile, introduced faster, higher performance and lower cost switches at $ 125 per port when other vendors cut Ethernet prices to historic lows. For the first time, the company publicly demonstrated its 48-port SmartSwitch 2200 Ethernet workgroup switch and switch box module for 48-port SmartSwitch 6000. Company officials said all 10 / 100M products use ASIC (Application-Specific Integrated Circuit) technology to speed up: the transmission speed reached 10 million packets per second, and provides 16Gbps throughput.
