侗族是中国南方少数民族之一,其族源同中国南方的古越人有着十分复杂而深厚的渊源。历代史书中记载了今天侗族地区的古代居民各自不同的称谓。秦代称为“黔中蛮”,魏晋南北朝时称为“僚”, 唐代又称为“僚浒”、“乌浒”,宋代之后其称谓更为混乱复杂,有“仡伶”、“仡佬”、“仡偻”、“苗”、“瑶”等等。降至明代,又有“峒人”、“洞蛮”之称。到清代则多称之为“洞苗”、“洞民”、“洞家”,或统称作苗,这也是古人将苗族、侗族混同的杂称。侗族自称为“干”或“更”,或“金”,其他民族称他们为“侗家”。
