季羡林先生是我国东方学学科的开创者 ,又是当今东方文化研究的一代宗师。从 2 0世纪 90年代初开始 ,季先生开始对“义理之学”发生兴趣。季先生关注儒学和中国哲学 ,自有他的知识背景 ,自有他的大思路。季先生以东、西文化历史性交流的大思路提出了“三十年河东 ,三十年河西”的观点。从近代以来“西风”流行、西方文化无情地冲击东方文化 ,到 2 0世纪 80年代以后东方传统、东方文化在国际上重新受到世人重视 ,季先生以他的经验和阅历 ,以他的知识和学养提出这个问题 ,可以说他是这段历史的见证人。而儒学作为东方文化体系的重要组成部分 ,从近代在东方的普遍衰落到当今的重又复苏 ,也恰巧印证了东、西方文化关系的这种历史变迁。这大概也就是季先生与儒学“结缘”的深刻原因吧。
